BuAri's house was beautiful. Since Bali is on the equator they only have two season, hot and hotter, they don't have to worry about enclosing rooms or houses. Much of BuAries house was open to the cool breezes that occasionally blew through.
This was where I slept the first night. I arrived a day early so not everyone in my class had arrived yet. It was nice, I got to get over some of my jet lag and explore a little
The next morning I went for a run and realized that I was the only 5'7" blonde haired blue eyed person.. anywhere. people starred and all of the children would run beside me for a little and wave and say hello (the only word they knew in english)
Before I left I bought the tiniest camera ever! You know the one Ashton Kutcher advertises? Well It fits perfectly into the little pockets on my running shorts, so I got some cool shots from around BuAri's village.
Eventually I made my way to the BEACH! Bali is a volcanic island, actually it is part of the ring of fire, so most of the beaches are black. The white beaches have been imported to satisfy the tourists.
I made it back without getting lost, which was a miracle, just in time to get picked up and taken to Puri Karangasem to start orientation.
Bed room for the first week. My roommate was 2 days late so I had it all to myself for a little bit. Jack says hi! |
There are geckos everywhere! This little guys came to see me my first night in the palace (Puri means Palace)
This is the view from my room. The porch across the way where all the books are is our classroom. The first morning because I was still jet lagged I got up at 4 and did a circuit. The next 3 days I was so sore and sitting on the floor with your legs all cramped up does not help at all.
We intensively studied Bahasa indonesia for a week at the palace. Our home stay families do not speak english very well if at all, so we had to be able to communicate with them once we arrived in Bedulu.
